Urmi Mehta, CFO, Silkflex Polymers India – A young, dynamic business personality pursues her passion as an author

12 June 2024: Urmi Mehta, CFO, Silkflex Polymers, shares perspectives on her debut novel ‘Fatal Love – A Love Undone’ and managing multiple roles with Screen Print India magazine.

Q: The role of CFO is quite a time consuming one with a high level of responsibility; how do you carve out the time and energy for your other passions ?
A: My journey as a book writer began long before my career as CFO. Where one is my skill other is my passion and one needs both in life. Being a CFO, energises me and being an author, calms me down. I make a conscious effort to manage my time effectively, delegate tasks, schedule activities and plan my day in advance so that I have enough time once in a while to write and relax.

Q: When and why did you decide to take up writing fiction as a vocation ?
A: For me writing fiction did not come up as a decision, it happened as a coincidence. I was always an avid reader and writing was a form of personal expression for me. It was almost at a very later stage of my writing process that I realised my work could actually be appreciated by a wider audience. I am grateful to my friends to bring it to my awareness. It was only after that realisation, that I become more serious and worked on it professionally.

Q: What made you decide to have such a complex theme for your debut novel ?
A: In the very beginning of my writing, I just had my climax with me. I knew how I wanted to end my story. It was a reverse study of what would justify the climax and the behaviour of the protagonists in it, that helped me create the novel. I guess, in making it real, it also became complex.

Q: To what extent would you say have the characters in your novel been based on or inspired by real life observations and interactions ?
A: In my novel, Fatal Love – A Love Undone, not only the characters, but also the situations and the emotional roller coaster is an inspiration from life as I see it unfolding around me. The characters are some built from people I know in my life and some from my imagination and hope of how they could be. I have tried to capture the raw emotions of humans and explore how despite people trying to be perfect, no one really is. And how that is okay and how even if you stop, the world around you keeps moving. There are multiple perspectives on life and human emotions that I have tried to explore allowing readers to think and question.

Q: Do you feel that despite having so many different vocations – being an author, counsellor, hypnotherapist and energy healer – you are able to focus on each of them adequately and live a better-quality life, which is more holistic and balanced ?
A: I find that balancing my responsibilities as both an author and CFO is beneficial as it allows me to engage a diverse set of skills and avoid burnout. Utilising my analytical skills in my role as CFO complements my creative abilities as an author, providing me with a well-rounded perspective. Managing multiple roles has not only enriched my life, but has also enhanced my problem-solving skills and brought a sense of balance and fulfilment in my life.
