KURZ at drupa 2024: Partner Projects at touchpoint packaging combine design, embellishment, sustainability, safety and cost-effectiveness

29 May 2024: Drupa 2024, the world’s leading trade fair for the printing and packaging industry, has just opened its doors to the latest innovations and advances in Düsseldorf from 28th of May to the 7th of June, 2024. This esteemed event will assemble industry leaders, experts and visionaries to offer insights into the future of print technology and present game-changing solutions.

The special feature of Drupa 2024 is Touchpoint Packaging (TPP). This specially designed forum provides a unique platform dedicated to trends and technologies in packaging and printing. TPP serves as a central hub for those interested in innovative packaging solutions and their environmental and societal impact. LEONHARD KURZ, Platinum Partner of Drupa and the official partner of TPP, will focus on core topics such as ‘Neo-Ecology’, ‘Consumers’ mind’, ‘Connectivity’, ‘Glocalization’ and ‘Future Regulations’ at the TPP, stand B31 in Hall 3. KURZ will present various partner projects, innovative design ideas and engaging talks.
Neo-Ecology: Responsible and Sustainable Packaging Kurz is presenting a project with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen on ‘Neo-Ecology’. This project uses the cold transfer technology from Heidelberg and Kurz for inline finishing of packaging. This technology conserves resources and offers ecological and economic benefits by saving material and energy, while providing a wide range of design options for packaging. The project also includes a recycling program for the carrier materials used, leading to sustainable production.

‘Magical Shapes’ boxes on display, made with a Speedmaster XL 106v printing machine from HEIDELBERG with KURZ KPS slim 2.0, use a 50% thinner carrier. The carrier is removed and recycled via KURZ RECOSYS®, returning the valuable raw material rPET to the cycle. The result is attractive, economical, and sustainable packaging. Stéphane Royère and Kerstin Haase will discuss this on 28th of May at 13:15 (CET) in a talk titled ‘Design meets Ecology and Economy: Unlocking the Potential of Cold Transfer for Sustainable Packaging Solutions.’

Connectivity: Design, Digital Finishing, and Security Under the ‘Connectivity’ theme, Kurz, in collaboration with HP Indigo and its subsidiary Scribos, is presenting a functionally designed and digitally enhanced honey packaging with security features. This packaging system demonstrates that it is not only intended to increase brand sales but also to conserve resources and ensure product authenticity through special security features such as the Scribos ValiGate® copy-protected QR code.

Technology allows consumers to scan product labels for detailed information. Using HP Indigo 6800 / 35K, KURZ DM-JETLINER, and DM-MAXLINER 3D machines, a copy protected QR code ValiGate® with 2-factor-authentication is created. On their mobile phones, users can view the unique and variable distribution of bees on the label. By comparing the position, orientation, and format of the bee displayed on their smartphone to the distribution on the packaging, consumers can verify the authenticity of the product. This interactive approach enhances security through a slot-machine-like process that combines digital print and digital embellishment, security (features), track & trace capabilities and consumer interaction. The DM-MAXLINER 3D opens up a wide range of embellishment options at top speeds in a single pass and the HP Indigo 6800 / 35K creates variable prints, which KURZ in turn combines with various embellishments.

A 40-minute panel discussion titled ‘Sweet & Protected: A smart combination of design and digitally printed brand protection’ will be held on the 29th May at 12:30 pm (CET). The speakers are Julia König, Senior Designer, Design Management Packaging & Print (KURZ), Anna-Lena Warnecke-Fischer, Project Manager DIGITAL METAL® (KURZ), Dr. Steffen Scheibenstock, Head of Digital Business Development (SCRIBOS), and Christian Menegon, Worldwide Business Development Manager Industrial Products & Solutions (HP).

Consumer’s Mind: New Individualism, Health, and Safety As part of the ‘Consumer’s Mind’ theme, Kurz presents the Boxes No. 3 project, which serves as a creative tool to illustrate current social, cultural, and design trends. The award-winning project serves as a creative and inspiring tool to transfer new trends in society and design to packaging.

In addition to the two panel discussions already mentioned, there will be two more talks by Kurz in the TPP area. On May 28 at 4:30 pm (CET), a table talk with Annie Kuschel, Head of Design Management Packaging & Print, entitled ‘View what’s next – Surface Inspiration, colors and trends’ is on the agenda. Furthermore, Christophe Dujardin, Global Business Development Manager Sustainability & Cold Transfer, will give a 20-minute presentation on May 30 at 11:45 am (CET) on the topic of ‘Redefining embellishment: How attractive embellishment, enhanced recyclability and reduced CO2 footprint go hand in hand.’
