Apple Banks on India than China to Jack-Up Poduction of iPhones

25 May 2022: Reports indicated that Apple is exploring to jack up production in India instead of China. Apple’s manufacturing partner is producing latest iPhone 13 in India. Apple is the second largest exporter from India for handsets after Samsung. Apple is said to have in talks with its existing suppliers in India and exploring to produce for exports.

As reported earlier, three companies namely Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron, the contract manufacturers for Apple iPhones, have received approval under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing.

Reports quoting Counterpoint Research study stated that India produced 3.1% of Apple’s iPhones in 2021 and it is hit about 6-7% growth in 2022. Apple is also said to have registered highest revenue from sale in India in 2021, touching nearly $2.09 billion against Samsung’s $2 billion. Apple (37%) and Samsung (22%), together account for nearly 60% of global sales revenue of mobile phones.

Meanwhile, Apple’s 2022 second quarter revenue recorded $97.3 billion, up 9 percent year over year from its sales of iPhone, Mac, and Wearables, Home and Accessories. “This quarter’s record results are a testament to Apple’s relentless focus on innovation and our ability to create the best products and services in the world,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are delighted to see the strong customer response to our new products, as well as the progress we’re making to become carbon neutral across our supply chain and our products by 2030.”

As Govt. of India is aggressively promoting its Production-linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for boosting manufacturing in the country, Apple can also stand to gain a lot from it.
